Living in West Chicago, IL

West Chicago is where I focus my business, and it’s a town I know block by block. It sits on the western edge of DuPage County and offers something that’s getting harder to find in the western suburbs: a real small-town downtown, a strong sense of community, and homes that are often more affordable than in neighboring Wheaton, Winfield, or Glen Ellyn.

Why People Love Living in West Chicago

  • A historic downtown. West Chicago started as a railroad junction, and its Main Street area still has local shops, restaurants, and bakeries within walking distance of the Metra station.
  • Community events. The annual Railroad Days festival each summer, farmers markets, and holiday events bring the whole town together.
  • Parks and open space. Reed-Keppler Park, Kline Creek Farm, and nearby DuPage County forest preserves offer trails, sports fields, and room to breathe. Cantigny Park in neighboring Wheaton is just minutes away.
  • A bilingual community. West Chicago has a large Spanish-speaking community, with Mexican restaurants, markets, and businesses throughout town. Se habla español.

Getting Around

West Chicago has its own Metra station on the Union Pacific West line with direct service to downtown Chicago. Route 59, Route 38 (Roosevelt Road), and Route 64 (North Avenue) run through or near town, with I-88 a short drive south. The DuPage Airport is also located in West Chicago.

Schools

Most of West Chicago is served by West Chicago Elementary School District 33 for elementary and middle school and Community High School District 94 (West Chicago Community High School). Some neighborhoods near the edges of town fall into neighboring districts, so always confirm the assigned schools for a specific address. I’m happy to check that for any home you’re considering.

Homes in West Chicago

West Chicago offers a wide mix of housing:

  • Older and historic homes near downtown
  • Mid-century ranches, split-levels, and bi-levels on established streets
  • Newer single-family subdivisions and townhome communities
  • Properties with larger lots on the outskirts of town

That variety makes West Chicago a great fit for first-time buyers, growing families, and investors alike. Prices and inventory change quickly, so the best way to see what’s available right now is to search current listings.
